Crisis Management
Prepare for Emergencies...
If you wait until you have a crisis on your hands to figure out what to do, it’s FAR too late.
Here are some of my past projects …
Federal Emergency Management Agency – When FEMA was created, I was given a one year assignment to serve as the agency’s first Director of News and Information and to establish plans and procedures to be used in National Disasters nationwide.
Federal Disaster Assistance Administration – For four years I was on-call to take on-location charge of the federal government’s public information efforts at the scenes of floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, and other natural and man-made disasters. In some cases, like the incident at Three Mile Island, I was the federal spokesman from the agency’s Washington headquarters.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission – Following the incident at Three Mile Island, I was directed by the NRC to visit other nuclear plants around the nation to review and assess their emergency plans for dealing with the news media in a future event.
The Hopi Indian Nation – When severe storms destroyed many of the Hopi Tribe’s traditional homes on their ancestral mesas in Arizona, the Department of Housing and Urban Development would only provide housing assistance if the houses were to be rebuilt to current building standards. This the Hopis refused wanting to keep their traditional construction methods. I was instrumental in getting the tribe financial aid by directing the funds through the State Department as a grant to an independent nation.
